Spiral galaxy in a triangle on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black triangle sits on the forearm, filled with a spiral galaxy rendered in grey shading with a bright core and a few small star points. The galaxy's arms are built from fine stippled texture that contrasts with the flat black edges of the triangle. The pale skin and dark, blurred studio background keep the focus on the design.

The dust devil came off the flats at the eleven o'clock hour, just as my father had said it would, and I stood under the forecourt canopy with the pump nozzle still in my hand while it walked across the road towards the Lucky Coyote. It was a grey spiral lit from inside by the last of the sun, and three points of light turned slowly in its arms like someone had flicked salt across the glass.

Dad kept a stack of petrol receipts in the glovebox and drew on the backs of them. Triangles, mostly. He said a triangle was the only shape honest enough to hold a whole galaxy without letting it spill, and that the trick was to leave the edges black so the light had somewhere to go. I used to think he was talking about the sky. The year the well ran dry he stopped talking about much of anything.
Haddow's lorry pulled in behind the pumps, horn tapping twice. He leaned out and asked whether I meant to stand there all night. I told him to wait. The spiral crossed the tarmac, shivered over his bonnet, and let its dust fall in one clean sheet, so that the air cleared enough to show the peaks to the north pricked with first light.
I took a biro from my apron and a receipt from the drawer. I drew the triangle first, pressing hard along its edges, then the spiral inside it, one arm at a time, with a dot for each star. I folded it twice and tucked it under the till for Dad, who would have known exactly what it meant.
