Eye in triangle on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed eye sits centred inside a large outlined triangle, with a pupil, iris highlight and shaded lid. Fine radiating lines fan out from the triangle's edges, creating a sunburst effect around the eye. The shading is black and grey, and the design is framed against a plain, softly blurred background.

Mrs Pardoe never let the lodgers near the attic stairs, but on the third night of the rain you found the door unlatched and the bulb swinging on its flex. Salt had got into everything at Gull Rise. The wallpaper bloomed, the banisters went soft, and the brass knocker had gone green as a pond. You climbed anyway, one hand on the damp rail, because the guest ledger said the room above had been let to a man named Teague in 1931 and never signed out.

The room held a single iron bed and a painted triangle on the ceiling, a plain outline in cream gloss with a gold eye at its centre. Its lid had been shaded so carefully the eye seemed to have just finished blinking. Rays ran from the triangle's edges across the plaster in thin black strokes, hundreds of them, fanning out until they met the cracks in the cornice. Someone had counted them and written the number in pencil under the sill: 364. Beneath that, in a looser hand: they only point one way when the tide is out.
You lay on the bed and watched the eye while the sea drew back beyond the breakwater. By two o'clock the rays had stopped being lines and become the spokes of a wheel, and the wheel had begun, very slowly, to turn. Mrs Pardoe's voice came up through the boards asking whether you wanted tea. You did not answer. The pupil was looking at the door, and when you finally looked down, the ledger lay open on your chest with a new entry in your own handwriting: Room seven, checked in, not yet checked out.
