Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black triangle contains a spiral galaxy with a bright central core, swirling arms and small four-pointed stars. The galaxy is built from fine stippled dots and soft grey shading, with the dark triangle giving strong contrast. The tattoo is photographed close up on the inner or outer forearm against a plain, slightly out of focus background.

Nell woke before the engine ticked over and found the cabin cold, the porthole furred with breath. She rubbed a circle clear with the heel of her hand. Beyond the towpath the gravel pits lay flat and black, and above them the sky had cleared the way it only did in February, so that she could count stars without trying.

Her father had taught her to find the spiral in the middle of them. He kept a tin of star charts under the bunk and a template cut from black card, three sides and no more, and he used to hold it up against the sky and say the dark was where you put the things you couldn't see yet. She had thought it was a joke until the year the Marigold Fen went under the bridge at Cressel with the wrong man at the tiller, and he stopped making jokes altogether.

Tull, the lock keeper, had nailed a notice to the gate that morning. The Trust wanted the hulk gone by Friday. Nell read it twice, then took the tin and the card out onto the cold deck, where the mooring rope smelled of diesel and frost.

She held the triangle up over the still water of the lock cut. Inside its edges the reflected stars were gathering into a slow turning arm, bright at the centre, exactly the swirl her father had inked into a dozen charts with a fine brush. She let go of the card. It sank without a sound, and for a moment the water kept the shape of the spiral before the lock gates groaned and the whole thing broke apart into light.
