Flower in a triangle on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single open flower with a rounded bloom and several leaves sits inside an outlined triangle. The thin black linework is clean and even, with light grey shading in the petals and leaves. The tattoo is centred on the upper arm against plain skin, with a dark top covering the rest of the frame.

Nobody on the fourth floor of Carrow House could agree on who had first put the seed in the crack. Mrs Okafor blamed the wind off the car park, the lad in flat twelve blamed the pigeons, and I said nothing, because I was the one who had emptied a tin of my allotment seed packets into my coat pocket the summer before, and I was the one who had knelt by the bin chute on a wet Tuesday to pick up a dropped glove and let a pinch of it fall into the grit. It came up in May, a single green stalk where the concrete had split, and by June it had made a fist of leaves.

Mr Pryce from the housing office came in July with a clipboard and a canister of weedkiller. He stood at the foot of the south stairwell, under the warning triangle the council had painted on the wall beside the chute, and looked up at the bloom. It had opened that morning, the petals crumpled like tissue paper still folded in a box, a dark mark at the centre where the stamens gathered. Mrs Okafor came down in her slippers to watch. Pryce tapped his pen against the clipboard for a long time.

In the end he didn't spray. He took the pen and drew a neat outline around the flower, sloping sides meeting at a point above it, the way you'd sketch a roof over a child's house, and wrote something small in the corner that I never read. Then he went back to his van and drove away, and the canister stayed on his passenger seat.

The following spring the triangle was still there, and so was the poppy, two stalks now, pushing up through the crack like a question nobody had got round to answering.
