Spiral motif line drawing design
Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of a figure-like shape containing several spirals: a large spiral at the lower centre, and smaller curled spirals in the upper section. The linework is uniform and smooth, with no shading, and the design is shown in black on a white background. The composition is symmetrical and fills the frame.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the tent pole, it bites. No, that bale is not for sitting on, it belongs to Mrs Pardoe's goat. Now. You'll want to know why the showman never lets anyone turn the Gallopers backwards, and that's where the story starts, with a carved woman standing in a field above Penwith, long before there was a fairground or a single painted horse.

Her name was lost, so the carters called her Old Coil, because her hair ran round her head in spirals, and round her belly, and round her heels, wherever you looked. Every spring the travelling people brought their wagons up that hill, and every spring they walked the spirals with their fingers, inward to the centre and out again, the way you'd untangle a knot of wool. A girl called Nessa Quill, who sold toffee apples and could not sit still, asked why. Nobody knew. Her grandmother said, 'Walk it slow and the road walks you home.'
One October the fair ran late and the lamps went out one by one. Nessa stepped onto the spiral in the dark, round and round, and when she reached the centre the wagons were gone, and so was the field. She came out again on the road outside Truro, looking no older than she had at supper, with toffee still sticky on her palm. That's why we walk the ride clockwise and never turn it back. Mind you, the Gallopers still stop each night at the centre of the field, and the horses face inward, listening.
