Stacked floral teacups on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows three views of the same forearm, each displaying a tall stack of floral teacups on saucers. The cups have bold black outlines with soft shading, and the patterns include blue and yellow flowers, green leaves, pink berries and pink roses. The design wraps around the arm, so each panel shows a different section of the stack.

The trolley wheel sticks at the lift on Ward Seven again, and you are the only one awake enough to coax it free. At twenty to four the urn in the kitchenette ticks as it cools. The cups in the cupboard never match: a blue-flowered one with a chipped rim, a yellow one, a green-dotted one, a pink-berried one, and the squat roses at the bottom, all rescued from house clearances the League of Friends never got round to sorting.

Mrs Okafor in bed four can't sleep and asks for tea in the good cups. You tell her there are no good cups, only the ones that survived. She laughs, then says her mother had a set like these, forty years back, that broke one saucer at a time during the move to Croydon. You stack them on the trolley the way her mother must have, biggest at the base, the rose cup underneath, and balance the teapot on top like a hat on a tall man.

At the swing doors the stack shivers. You stop, hold your breath and let the weight settle until nothing rattles. Down the corridor a monitor chirps and goes quiet. Mrs Okafor watches from her doorway, the lamp catching the gold on the yellow flowers, and says you have steadier hands than the night nurse, who has never once made tea that tasted of anything.
