Stacked teacups with floral and bird designs
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows four teacups stacked one on top of another, each with a handle and a decorative band. The cups are filled with traditional-style motifs including roses, blossoms, leaves, dotted borders and two small birds perched on a branch. The outlines are bold, even black linework on a plain pale background, with no shading or colour.

Dear Tom,

The Bramleys are in and the wasps have finally given up on the windfalls, so I have time to write properly. Mrs Okafor has taken the four good cups down from the dresser for the vicar's sister on Sunday, and she has stacked them on the kitchen table the way they were when your grandfather carried them home from the Ledbury stall in 1961, top cup to bottom, rose to rose. Nobody has ever stacked them straight since. The handles always end up on the wrong side and the top one leans as if it is listening to something.
You asked once why we never use the bottom cup. It is the one with the roses climbing up from the foot, and the gold on its rim went years ago, so it lives in the cupboard for best and comes out for funerals and christenings. The third cup has the two little birds on the branch, one looking at the other as if about to say something rude. When you were six you counted the leaves on that branch every morning while I poured. You got to nineteen once and then lost your place and never found it again.
This week the top cup, the one with the apple blossom and the dotted band, cracked clean across the handle. Mrs Okafor glued it with a patience I never had, and it is still on the table now, drying with a clothes peg clipped to its lip. I told her to leave it there. I want you to see it when you come home for the harvest supper. I want you to count the leaves again and tell me whether you still get to nineteen.
Love, Mum
