The camera had been Aunt Maud's, and it still smelled of vinegar and the cellar under the post office. Nell carried it up the lane at dusk, past the last cottage, where the hedges gave way to beech trees, because the light was best at the forest edge and because her brother Tom had said she wouldn't dare.

She had one shot left in the pack. Tom waited by the stile with his cap in his hands, pretending not to watch. Beyond the wall the rosebush Mum planted the year the mill closed had gone wild, its red heads nodding, and a robin kept repeating itself from the hawthorn. Nell lifted the camera and pressed the button. It whirred and spat its grey tongue of paper into the cold.

They waited together, the way you wait for bread to rise. Tom leant over her shoulder, and the picture crept up out of the dark like something surfacing in a pond: the hedge first, then his half-turned grin, then the rose, black at its heart where the shadow fell.

"Everything," he read, squinting at the back, where she had scratched the word in pencil before losing her nerve. "You're not putting that on anything."

Nell said nothing. That night she set the photograph inside the little brass frame on Maud's windowsill, beside the sand glass, and watched the grains run. By the time the top bulb emptied, Tom's bus had gone over the ridge, and the petals were already browning in the lane. She turned the glass over and started counting again.
