Dear Nell, The hoarding at the bottom of Crane Street is finished at last. I painted it on the Tuesday, which your mother always said was unlucky for brushwork, though I have never believed in luck, only in the drying times of enamel. Two words, no more. The council wanted a slogan about bins, and I told them I would sooner starve.

I spent three evenings on the letters. I used the number two rigger with the cracked ferrule you bought me in Margate, and I let the tail of the S run off the edge of the board the way the old coachmen did on the sides of their vans. Mr Okafor from the chip shop stood on the pavement with his arms folded and said it looked like someone was shouting in joined-up writing. I took that as praise.
The words are for the lads at the yard, who have had a rough winter with the cranes coming down and the contract going to a firm from Leeds. Nobody asked me to write them. I simply got up one morning, opened the tin of black and thought, that is what they need to hear, and the loops came out of the brush as if they had been waiting in the bristles all along.
Pop round on Sunday and see it. The flourish under the p comes back up on itself, like a man who has been knocked flat and found his feet again. I left a small dot by the d where the brush hesitated. You will know it when you see it. Love, Dad.
