Star and sun tattoo on the back of the neck

Geometric · Neck · Colour · Photo

A woman with dark hair tied up is photographed from behind, showing a small tattoo on the back of her neck. The design is a five-pointed star inside a ring, with short rays around the outside that give it a sun-like look. The ink appears dark blue against the skin, and the soft outdoor background of foliage fills the rest of the frame.

The gnomon had split in the frost, and Brother Aldous was on his knees in the wet grass of the infirmary garden, trying to fit the two halves back together before Prior Hugh came out with the morning list. Someone had cut the dial forty years ago: a ring of Roman numerals around a five-pointed star, with short rays scored between the hours, so the thing looked less like a clock than a small sun that had fallen onto the stone.

"Leave it," said Sister Maud from the gate, a basket of comfrey on her hip. "The sun doesn't need a hinge to go round." He told her a sundial that could not be read was only a bowl of rock, and she laughed the way she always did, as though he had made a joke he had not meant. She had come to the cloister as a girl with a stolen almanac and a habit of counting bells, and in all the years since she had never once asked him what the time was.

He worked a lead dowel into the crack with a bone awl until the halves met. The shadow crept across the face while he worked, a dark blade sliding over the points, and he realised he had been measuring it wrong for years. The star was never meant for marking the hours. It was for finding where the day turned.

When Hugh came at last, the gnomon stood straight and the shadow lay exactly along the seventh ray. "Ring for Lauds," Aldous said, and Maud, who had been waiting at the bell rope since dawn, pulled.
