Star constellation tattoo on the side

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small constellation made of black dots joined by thin lines sits on bare skin. The dots vary in size and the linework is delicate, with no shading or fill. The tattoo is centred on the upper part of the frame, with a dark floral jacket and zip in the lower right.

Ennil never let me join the lines. I could prick the stars into wet clay with the bone awl, one small dot for each light, but the joining was his, because a line was a promise about where a thing stood, and he said a boy of twelve could not be trusted with promises. So I learned the dots by heart instead, their sizes and their gaps, the way the small ones crowded near the big orange star that hung above the reed marsh in the month of barley.

When the river came over the lower wall that spring, it took the storehouse and every tablet in it except the one I had carried home under my tunic. Ennil lay with fever for nine days, muttering about the northern sky and the seven sisters who were never sisters at all. On the tenth morning he asked for the chart. I put the single wet tablet in his hands, and he looked at it for a long time without speaking, while the lamp guttered and the frogs went quiet outside.

Then he took the stylus and drew the lines between my dots. I expected him to correct me. Instead he drew straight through the spaces I had left empty and said the sky had always been a little bolder than the men who measured it dared to admit. He did not say I had been right. He only pressed the last join into the clay with his thumb and told me to take the tablet up the stairs before the sun got into it.

He died the next winter. I carried the tablet to the top of the tower one last time, and in the cold before dawn I drew one more line, between two stars that had never been joined, a promise nobody had asked me to make. Then I let the wind take the dust from the clay.
