Star Wars emblems in mandala tattoos

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two matching tattoos sit side by side on the forearms, each a circular mandala of layered petal-like geometric shapes. The centre of the left tattoo holds the Galactic Empire emblem and the right tattoo holds the Rebel Alliance emblem, both as solid black shapes. The linework is clean, with solid black fills and fine detail in the surrounding pattern, shown in black and grey only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the lane above Glenmore by four o'clock, and the Crooked Hart's only guests were you and Mags Ferrier's nephew, who had spent the afternoon arguing about whether a rebellion could ever be neat. You sat by the stove with a stub of pencil, drawing circles on the back of the inn's bill, because that was what your hands did when the talk got too loud.

Mags came through with the soup and looked over your shoulder. "Petals," she said. "Like a cabbage that's been to church." You told her the petals were the point, that every layer holds something back, a ring folded inside a ring. Her nephew Col, who could not sit still for more than a minute, said the Empire had the tidier ring, and you let him have it, because tidy was not the same as right and you both knew it.

Later, when the lamps were low and the wind had found the loose slate on the roof, you filled the circles in black, one petal at a time. You put a hard, plain emblem in the centre of one and a broken starburst in the other. Col watched the centres take shape and went quiet. "Same size," he said. "Same size," you agreed.

In the morning the plough came up the lane and the road reopened with a sound like tearing paper. Col took the left sheet and you took the right, and neither of you folded them. You pressed them flat against the window, two black flowers on the cold glass, and watched the daylight pass straight through both.
