Mrs Orrell had let the attic room at Gull Terrace to the diver for three winters, and he still came down to breakfast with his boots wet, as though the sea had followed him up the stairs. Nell watched him from the scullery hatch. He never spoke of the work except to say the cold was honest, and that the wreck below the harbour wall had a door no one had opened since the war.

Nell was nine that autumn. She kept a jar of glass beads under the sink and a wooden doll with a faded ribbon bow, and she decided the diver needed a keepsake to take down with him. Each morning she left a sprig of bramble on his plate, and each morning he wrapped it in a handkerchief and put it in his breast pocket before going out.

In November the tide turned early and the boats stayed in. The diver did not come down for breakfast. Mrs Orrell sent Nell up with his tea, and she found the attic door unlatched and the brass helmet sitting on the bed like a sleeping animal, its round glass eyes catching the lamp. Beside it lay a letter addressed to her and a dropper bottle of green ink, the kind used to mark charts.

The letter said only that he had gone down to bring up the door, and that she should keep the beads. Nell kept the helmet instead, polishing it with vinegar every Sunday. When the spring tides came she stood on the harbour wall and dropped one bead into the water for every day he had not come up.
