Star with swirls and heart design
Black and grey · Flash
A single five-pointed star drawn in pencil or ink, split into sections that each hold a different pattern. The panels include flowing swirls, a shaded heart, dotted lines and a circular radial motif. The linework is fine and the shading is greyscale, with the star centred on a plain white background.

The old star-maker in Skerrick Haven kept five pots of ink on his bench and never let them touch. Mattie Oram, who swept his floor in exchange for bread, watched him draw a single star on vellum the size of a tablecloth. He worked in pencil first, then ink, cutting the star into five panels with a ruler he had carved from a whale rib.

Each panel, he told her, was a room a sailor could live in. One held swirls like the wake of a ketch turning in a squall. One held dots, a thousand of them, counted so the sea could not steal any. In the centre of the third he shaded a heart and left its lit side bare, and when Mattie asked why, he said a heart is only honest when it is half in shadow.
The ship Halloran's Wren sailed that spring with the star folded in oilcloth inside the captain's chest. Forty days out the compass spun and would not settle. The mate unrolled the drawing and found the radial panel, its fine rings gathering toward one point, and the needle, for the first time since the Wren left harbour, swung round and lay along it.
Mattie never saw the ship come home. Every spring a boy still climbs up from the quay with a tin of ink and asks for the star-maker, and the star-maker, bent now and very slow, takes the tin, uncaps it, and begins again with the rib-handled ruler, which is still, against all reason, true.
