Starry night panda on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A stylised panda is the central subject, with its body filled by a dark teal night sky dotted with small white stars and layered pine tree shapes. The panda's ears, eye patches and muzzle are rendered in flat pink, coral and dark tones, with small clouds in pale pink along the lower edge. The bold, solid shapes sit on smooth skin, with the design framed by the leg and a grey garment at the top of the frame.

Mind the lamp, you great lump, it's not a candle for your elbow. Sit down. No, the bench by the nets, where the tar hasn't got under it yet. Right. You wanted the one about the panda that came down off the hill in the ice year.

Old Tomas Fenn ran four boats out of Ardmore, and the spring the herring went deep he sent his youngest, Rhiannon, up the pine wood above the harbour for kindling. She came back at dusk with no kindling and a bear under her arm. Not a real bear. A black and white thing the size of a hound, with a face like a bishop and eyes full of little lit windows, and across its back the whole night sky, stars pricked through the fur like salt in dark bread. Pink clouds lay low along its flanks like they'd come to rest there after a long day.
They called it Panda, because that was what the tinker's wife called the picture on her tea tin, and it followed the boats. Every night it sat on the harbour wall and looked up, and every night the fleet came home by it, because the stars on its back were the true ones, set in the right order. Then the fog came down that autumn, thick as wet wool. Nobody could see the lighthouse. Nobody but Panda, who walked out along the wall with the sky rippling on its shoulders, and the boats followed the bright spots home one by one.
Tomas never once thanked it. He said a sea like that owes you nothing. But every October after, he left a fish head on the wall, and every morning the stars on that creature's back were a little brighter, and the pines on its flanks had grown a needle more.
