The ship took eleven weeks and I have stopped counting the days since we passed the Cape. Frank Penhaligon dropped his tobacco tin over the side off the cliffs at the bottom of the world and wept like a boy, so you see we are not all brave men out here. The land is nothing like the engine houses above Camborne. It is red where it isn't gold, and it runs on so far a man half expects to walk off the edge of the paper it is printed on.
Mr Trevithick gave me a map on the quay with the colonies pencilled in by hand. I have drawn a little red heart on it over the coast where we came ashore, the way Agnes used to mark the loaves she was proud of. The island down in the south looks like a crumb you would sweep off the table, and I told the others so, and they laughed at me the way Father used to laugh at my drawings. The works are three days' ride inland. The dust gets into the bread and the flies get into the dust, but the wages are paid in coin that does not blow away.
The letters go slowly, so I will not promise you anything I cannot keep. I will write when the ship comes in and not before.
When the stars go out over Carn Brea, put your finger on the heart on that map and I will be standing on it, shading my eyes, looking north for the smoke of your fire.
