Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two solid black quotation marks on a plain white background, an opening mark on the left and a closing mark on the right. The shapes have smooth, bold edges with no shading, and the marks are separated by a wide gap in the centre of the frame. The composition is minimal, with the design occupying only a small area of the page.

Eda had been shouting the same sentence across Corran Gap since before the first snow, and the wind kept stealing the end of it. "The ewes are through the wall," she called, and the gully flung the words back over her shoulder in pieces. On the far lip, her brother Dafydd stood with his crook planted and his black dog pressed against his leg. He did not answer. He never did when the wind was up, and she suspected that was the point.

The quarrel was about a wall nobody had built since their father died. Each of them had shifted a line of stones in the dark, and each swore the other had done it first. For two winters they had kept to their own sides of the pass, sending news by the carrier's cart, which went round by the road, took three days, and told the truth only by accident.
On the fourth morning Eda took a slate and a stub of chalk up to the cairn. She wrote the sentence in capitals so it would survive the weather, then drew the two marks around it, the opening one curled like a breath held back, the closing one heavier, as if to say that was all. She left a clean inch of slate between them. Then she weighted it with a stone and set it where the gap was narrowest.
Dafydd came up slowly, the dog ahead of him. He read it twice, and she watched his shoulders drop. When he chalked something beneath her words, the wind did not get to it at all. He had filled the space between the marks with a single word, and it was "Yes."
