Steer outline tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline of a steer facing right, drawn in a single even line with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits on the inside of a lower leg near the ankle, with the skin surface looking slightly glossy under the light. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo, with a blurred beige wall and a few household objects in the background.

The snow had closed the pass for nine days when the steer came down to the inn at Hollin Gate. Mrs Abernethy saw it first, from the scullery window, a plain black outline against the white yard, standing where the cart track bent. It made no breath in the cold, which she thought strange, and it did not move when she called to it.

Her husband Tam said it was a beast from the drovers' herd that had wandered off before the storm, and he went out with a lantern and a rope. The steer let him come close. It turned its long head to the right and looked back up the valley, the way the road ran, as if it had been sent to fetch someone and was waiting for them to come along.

Tam came back in before dawn with the rope coiled over his shoulder and no animal behind him. He said only that the steer had walked ahead of him up the track, never once looking round, and that where its hooves should have sunk into the drift there was only a single unbroken line on the snow, drawn fine and even, as though someone had traced it with a pen.

In the spring the thaw uncovered a drover's boots at the bend in the road, and a copper ring worn thin, and nothing else. Mrs Abernethy kept a lantern burning in the yard every winter after that. The steer never came back, though she swore to her grandchildren that she had seen its shape in the frost on the window whenever a traveller was lost on the hill.
