Small bear outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small single-line tattoo of a bear walking in profile, with a fur-textured back and a rounded head. The linework is thin, black and unshaded, with no fill or colour. The bear sits centrally on the inner ankle, with the skin and a teal and white backdrop filling the frame.

Tom, the snow came down on the Hause on Tuesday and didn't lift until Thursday, so you'll have read my last letter in the wrong order. Ignore the first page. Father's cart is in the ditch below the bridge where it slid, and I've left it there so he can shout about it properly when he sees it.

The bear came down the pass the morning after the storm. Mrs Oakes saw it from the byre, walking in that unhurried way bears have, head low, as if it were reading the ground. It crossed the road in front of the chapel without once looking at us. I stood at the kitchen window with the bread knife still in my hand, feeling foolish, and watched it climb the scree towards the Gap.
I went up after it on Friday with the dog. There was nothing in the snow but its prints, one foot set neatly after another, the stride so long I had to stop and lean on my stick to measure it. At the top of the Gap the tracks simply ended, and I couldn't tell whether it had gone over the far side or turned back the way it came. I stood there a long while with the wind pulling at my scarf.
I want you home before the thaw, though not for the bear. I keep thinking how it knew the way through all that white without a single wrong step. Come and show me the path. The kettle's on, and I've drawn the animal on the back of the feed bill so you'll know what I mean. Mind the ice on the bridge. Your sister, Ada.
