Small elephant outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant with a single black outline, shown in profile facing left with its trunk curled down and a visible ear and eye. The linework is thin and even with no shading or fill, and the skin around it has a warm reddish tone. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with a blurred wall and mirror in the background and a sleeve and fingertips at the edge.

At half past six the queue at Stannerby crossing had thinned to a single camper van and a man in a grey raincoat, who held a paper napkin flat on the counter with two fingers. Nell Ferrier took his passport first, as she always did, and only then looked at what he had placed beside it.

It was an elephant, drawn in blue biro in one unbroken line, the ear a loose scoop, the trunk curled down like a question mark. "Lottie wanted one that wasn't scared of anything," he said. "I did four. This was the only one that didn't look like a dog in a coat." The form on Nell's screen asked for the purpose of travel and nothing else, so she asked him where he was going. Lisbon, for a week with his daughter, who had flown out ahead to be with her mother's people. Lottie was seven and had been counting the days on the fridge.
Nell stamped the page and held the napkin a moment longer than the handbook allowed. Then she slid it under the glass of her booth, beside the photographs the other officers kept of their own children and a faded postcard of a harbour nobody remembered visiting. He watched her do it and didn't ask for it back.
When his van had passed the barrier, Nell bent to the glass. The lamp above the lane caught the blue lines and the single unbroken stroke of the trunk, and she thought of the child who had asked for a brave animal and been given one that simply went on walking. "Next," she said, and lifted her hand for the lorry behind.
