Small llama outline tattoo on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline of a llama or similar animal sits on the top of a bare foot, between the big toe and second toe. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the figure is drawn in a single outline. The toenails are painted red and black against a dark grey textured background.

I was the one who fed it. Nobody else would go near, though it never once bit anyone. It took oats from my palm and looked at me the way the second mate looked at a bad invoice. When the swell came up off the Horn and the crates began to slide, it was the llama that stood square on the lee side, four neat feet planted, and would not budge. The cook swore it had a sailor's sense of balance. Marr said it had a sailor's temper.
Off Cape Finisterre we lost a pallet of tinned peaches over the side, and the captain ordered the animal put ashore at the next port. We made Liverpool in drizzle. The llama walked down the gangway on its own, paused at the bottom, and turned back once to look at the ship. Then it stepped onto the quay with that stiff, unbothered walk, as though it had only been checking the crew were managing without it.
