Stick figure on a trampoline on the palm
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a simple black stick figure with arms raised, standing above a small trampoline drawn as an oval frame on legs. The lines are uniform and thin, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. Two photographs of the same inner palm sit side by side, one with the fingers spread and one angled with the hand turned, on a dark glossy surface.

The trampoline came off the back of a lorry in August, two weeks before the picking started, and my uncle Dennis swore it was the last sensible thing he would ever buy. It sat between the Bramley rows like a dropped drum skin, springs catching the light, and nobody in the family could agree on who it was for.

Mum said the grandchildren. Dennis said the wasps. Gran said nothing at all. She just stood at the kitchen window with her tea going cold, watching the spot where the mat met the grass as if it might sink into the ground on its own.
I was the one who climbed on first, which was the only thing I ever did properly that summer. The mat gave under my feet and the whole orchard tipped up at me: branches, windfalls, the chipped white gate, and for a second I could see over the hedge to the reservoir road. Each bounce I pressed a little harder, to be sure I would come down in the same place.
On the last evening of August Gran walked out in her slippers, stood at the edge and said, "Go on then, it's not going to bounce itself." I jumped until my calves burned and she laughed, properly, the way she used to before the winter. When the light went orange I climbed down and found a windfall lying on the mat, bruised and sweet. I left it there so the wasps would have something to argue about.
