Matching puzzle piece wrist tattoos

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two identical puzzle piece outlines sit on the inside of a pair of wrists, one on each arm, and are drawn in a thin, even black line. The pieces are small and set at the same height, so they read as a matching pair. The photograph is taken from above in a plain tiled room, with the ink in black against the skin and no shading or colour.

Dear Nell, the press went quiet at four on Thursday, and Mr Okonedo let us keep the last sheet of the Harbour Lights puzzle, the one with the cut that never sold. It's on my windowsill now, pinned under the kettle so the draught doesn't lift it off the sill.

You'll remember the die. Four hundred knife-edged pieces to a board, every one struck from the same steel mould, so any piece from any box is the same as any other. Dad used to say that was the whole trick: nothing in a shop was ever made to fit anything in particular. Then Pritchard came over with his tea and fished two pieces out of the offcut bin. Same cut, same knob and hollow, and he laid them side by side on the bench and said they'd match whichever way you turned them. I thought that was a miserable thing to say about a box of plywood. I think now he meant it kindly.

I'm posting you the pair tomorrow. Don't ask me why, because I haven't worked it out myself. Keep one in the tin with Gran's buttons and put the other in your coat pocket. When Tom asks what it is, tell him it's the only piece in the building nobody could have cut wrong.

The light's gone off the bench now and the press is under its cover. I'll ring on Sunday. Mind the bus fare, it's gone up again.

Love, Jean
