Stick figure runner with 13.1
Black and grey · Photo
A simple stick figure of a runner in mid-stride, with a ponytail and the numerals 13.1 written beneath the legs. The linework is a uniform, bold black outline with solid ink and no shading. The tattoo is shown in black ink against a plain, lightly coloured skin background, with the figure filling most of the frame.

Sit down, the lot of you, before the sausage rolls go cold. Yes, you, Gavin, I can see the bottle behind your back. Now. She'd entered the Leeds half marathon on a bet with her sister, and she wanted someone to tell her she was mad. I told her she was mad. She said she knew, and asked me to meet her at the start line with a flask of tea and no speeches.

Thirteen point one miles is a long way to think about your life, so she thought about the cross-country course, the one that went through Hobb's Wood and past the sheep that always followed you to the gate. By the seventh mile her ponytail had worked loose and she was running like a stick drawn in a hurry, all knees and elbows and no shame. She told me afterwards the numbers on the bib stopped mattering around mile nine. What mattered was the sound of her own breath coming back to her like someone she'd forgotten she liked.
She crossed the line in two hours and eleven minutes, and she didn't cry, which her sister says was the real miracle. Instead she bought a biro from the timing tent, drew herself on the back of her hand, and said she'd have it done properly once she could feel her legs again. So if you see her in the Crown on Friday, don't make a fuss. Just ask her how the sheep were.
