Matching stick figure girls on feet

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two near-identical tattoos of simple stick figure girls with dark hair and striped dresses sit on the top of each foot near the ankle. The figures are drawn in thin, even black outline with no shading, and each holds a thin line in one hand. The pale skin and plain background keep the focus on the two matching designs, which are shown side by side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler at Gallow Cross had played the same reel since nine, and the floor was thick with dust and spilled cider. Nell and her cousin Bet had walked four miles in clogs to be there, and their mothers had made them promise to stay where they could see each other. So they knotted a length of grey twine between their hands and danced the whole night on the same few boards, one turning whenever the other turned.

Just before midnight a man from the mill, Tobias Crane, asked Bet to dance. She looked at Nell, and Nell let the twine go slack and said nothing. The string slid through Bet's fingers and she was gone into the crowd, laughing, her striped skirt flying. Nell stood with the loose end in her fist and watched the thread trail away across the floor like a path someone had forgotten to finish.

When the lamps were turned down, Nell walked the four miles home alone, the twine coiled in her pocket. Halfway along the lane she felt a tug at the far end, and there was Bet, running with her shoes in her hand, out of breath and cross, saying the mill man had trod on her hem twice and she had come after her cousin like a dog after a cart.

They never cut the twine. Through every winter after, the two of them walked to the Cross and back with a single length of it between them, each holding one end, and at the chapel gate Bet tied her end to the post and Nell untied hers, and the knot stayed there, grey and soft with rain, long after the hall had fallen in.
