Mrs Ashdown had logged eleven umbrellas, a violin and a pair of wedding shoes before anything on the lost-property shelves began talking back. The first was a birdcage with a red bird pressed flat against the wire, and a card tucked through the bars read I CAN BE THE SUBJECT OF YOUR DREAMS, in handwriting that pressed too hard.

The owner came for the cage on a Friday. He was a retired signalman called Owen Pryce, who wanted it back for his sister, now in a care home in Skipton. He could not say why the card mattered, only that she had written it at sixteen and denied it ever since. Mrs Ashdown wrapped the cage in brown paper and did not ask. Next came a teacup with a note that said YOUR TOUCH, MY COMFORT AND MY LULLABY, then a paper plane whose banner read ONLY FOOLS FALL FOR YOU, which she unfolded beside the kettle and read twice.

By March the shelf held more promises than luggage. Mrs Ashdown began to suspect that the station had quietly become a place where people left the things they meant to say. She kept a ledger in pencil, with one column for claimed and one for not yet.

On the last day of the month a man in a tweed coat asked after a red bicycle with a chipped bell. He held up a folded scrap in his palm: YOU MAKE MY HEART SHAKE, BEND AND BREAK. She found the entry in her own pencil, read it back to him, and handed the bicycle across without a word.
