Fine line handwritten script tattoo reading still and beautiful on the side of the torso, in black and red ink.

Still Beautiful script on the side of the torso

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two lines of handwritten script read "still" and "Beautiful", stacked on the side of a bare torso where the skin folds slightly. The linework is thin and slightly uneven, with the word "still" in dark ink and "Beautiful" in a reddish tone with dark edges. The soft, close crop and warm, muted tones keep the focus on the lettering.

Nobody on Skerrin Head could read the keeper's hand except Ada Murrow, so when the lamp at the top of the rock went dim in the third week of November, it was Ada who climbed the stair with the oil can and a pencil behind her ear.

Her father had written his log every night for thirty years in the same slanted script, the loops of his letters tall as masts. The last entry before the fever read only: still. Below it, a second line was pressed so hard the nib had torn the paper: Beautiful. Ada sat on the iron step and tried to work out which word was the instruction and which was the description. The sea struck the rock beneath her in long, patient blows.

She decided the first word meant the lamp. Keep it still, do not let the wick jump. So she trimmed it, filled it, and kept her hand on the brass until her knuckles ached. Toward dawn a trawler that had been drifting blind off the Vennel Bank saw the beam hold steady across the water and turned for home.

When the relief boat came, the man who stepped off asked what the words in the log had meant. Ada said she had taken them for a sign. He laughed, then looked out at the sea going silver and said her father had always called it that, and that the second word was for the light itself. Ada climbed the stair again and wrote it beneath his in her own clumsy hand, for whoever came next to read.
