Still and Beautiful in fine line script
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two words in thin, handwritten-style script sit one above the other on a fold of pale skin. The word "still" is above "Beautiful", and both are drawn in dark ink with a fine, even line and no shading. The background is softly blurred and light, with the edge of another limb visible on the left.

Dear Tom,

The 6.42 was cancelled again this morning, so I have been sitting on the bench outside the ticket office with a flask of tea and your old postcard from Whitby. Mr Ashdown from the newsagents came out to tell me the line is closed until Thursday, and I said that was fine, because I have nowhere I need to be. He looked at me as if I had said something in Welsh.
Words are awkward at the moment. I keep trying to write the thing you wanted me to say on the platform, and every version comes out either too much or too little. So here are the two I managed to keep. Still, which is what I am, apparently, the one who never left the market town. And beautiful, which is what you wrote in the margin of the timetable the day you went, though you crossed it out before the train pulled in, and I have never worked out whether you meant the frost on the glass roof or me.
The porter has put the kettle on in the waiting room, and the stationmaster's dog keeps trying to get at my sandwich. I think I will walk down to the level crossing and watch the lamps come on along the line. When the first train finally comes through I will wave at it with my whole arm, the way you used to, as if someone might be looking out of the window.
Still yours, Nell.
