Cat with mandala on thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cat's face with a tabby-style forehead and blue-grey eyes sits at the centre of a symmetrical mandala. The cat's outline is a fine dark line, while the fur and mandala petals are built from stippled dots and soft grey shading. The design is shown in close view on the outer thigh, with the mandala's points spreading out around the cat's head.

Biscuit had been missing since Tuesday, and Ruth Mensah found her at ten past three, sitting bolt upright on the top shelf of the linen cupboard as though she had been posted there. Her face was a small grey lantern in the dark, the tabby stripes running up her forehead like pencil marks, and her eyes held the blue of the emergency lights that never quite switched off.

Ruth had forty minutes before her next round and no intention of wasting them. She lifted the cat down, and Biscuit allowed it with the air of someone accepting a late invitation. They went out past the sluice and the drip stands. The corridor floor was laid in terracotta squares that somebody had chosen in 1978, and each one had a faded star worn into its centre, so that walking the length of it felt like crossing the middle of a flower.
In bay six, Mr Adeyemi had been awake since midnight, pressing the call bell for nothing but the sound of a voice. Ruth set the cat on the foot of his blanket, and she folded herself into a neat grey circle while the quilted diamonds fanned out around her like petals on a dish. The old man laughed, a dry sound that caught in his chest, and reached out one finger to the soft place behind her ears. 'Sunday,' he said. 'She was called Sunday, and she never once came when she was wanted.' He closed his eyes. Ruth went to finish her round, and when she looked back from the doorway the cat was still there, his hand resting on her, and the ward had gone quiet.
