Black cat with red collar on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A stylised black cat sits in profile with its head turned towards the viewer, its tail curling up at the back. The silhouette is filled with solid black ink, with small green eyes and a red collar or ribbon at the neck as the only colour accents. The cat is centred against a plain dark background, with the skin's sheen visible across the arm.

Mrs Ashby never fed the cat. It came to the back step of the Gilded Lily every night at eleven, sat under the lamp with its tail curled like a question mark, and waited for someone foolish enough to open a door. Dolan Frewin said it was bad luck. I said it was the only honest thing on Tanner Street, since it had never once pretended to want anything it didn't.

The red ribbon at its throat was the first thing I noticed when I started counting the stock. Mrs Ashby swore the Harrow pearls were in the safe, the safe had been locked since Tuesday, and the cat was sitting on the lid of the cellar grate as though someone had paid it to. Its green eyes followed me down the steps without any hurry at all.
"You're late," I told it, which was a foolish thing to say to a cat, but nobody else was listening.
The pearls were under a sack of coal in the corner, wrapped in a handkerchief with a D and an F stitched in the corner. Dolan had been the only man on the premises with a key to the coal chute. I stood there a long while holding that handkerchief, and the cat wound round my ankle, purring like a kettle just before it boils. When I looked up the steps it had gone, leaving only the lamp and the smell of wet pavement.
Dolan was at the counter the next morning, whistling, with a length of red ribbon knotted neatly around his wrist.
