Mrs Pargeter's cat had never once come when called, so the whole of Saltcombe Terrace noticed when Tibbs sat down on the chip shop wall at half past eleven and refused to be carried home. The wind was coming off the harbour with rain in it. Tibbs ignored it. He stared straight up, tail curled round his paws, as though the sky owed him an explanation.

Then the stars began to drop. They came down slow and polite, the pale ones with soft dusty edges, and settled on the slates like moths round a lamp. One landed on the bins. One rolled into the gutter and hissed. Tibbs leapt after each of them with great seriousness, batting them back towards the sea, and the little brass star on his pink collar winked every time he turned.

Mrs Pargeter, who had taught Year Four to read for thirty-one years and had no patience for nonsense, came out in her dressing gown with a torch. "Tibbs Pargeter," she said, which was the only time anyone had used his full name. "Come down this minute."

He came down. He jumped onto the windowsill, shook the rain from his ears, and looked at her with the calm of a cat who has done his job. The next morning the sky over Saltcombe had one fewer star in it, a neat small gap just above the harbour light, and Mrs Pargeter found one clean white star pinned to the lid of the bin, which she kept in the kitchen drawer with the string and the spare keys.
