Stretching cat with heart on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A cat stretches forward with its back legs raised and tail curled up, with a small pink heart floating above its head. The outlines are thin and dark, while the body is filled with soft washes of green, blue, orange and pink that fade at the edges. The subject sits centred on pale skin against a pink background.

Pudding had stretched the same way every morning for eleven years, long before the bakery on Quay Street had a name painted over its door. She woke on the warm sill above the ovens, planted her front paws on the cold flagstones, and pushed her back legs out behind her until her spine made a bridge of fur that caught the light in green and orange. Then her tail curled up like a question mark, and she held still, listening to the dough rise.

Tomasz, the apprentice, swore she was asking for something. Most mornings she got a heel of yesterday's rye, and most mornings a small pink heart seemed to drift up from her nose and hang over the proving baskets, though nobody else ever saw it take shape. Mrs Adeyemi from the flat above the chemist said it was only steam off the cooling racks. Tomasz didn't argue. He had learned that Pudding's ideas were usually better than his.
The winter the widow Hale stopped coming down the street was the coldest the town could remember. Her shop bell had gone silent after her husband died, and the bread queue, once a noisy line of workmen, had thinned to nobody at all. One dark December morning Pudding stretched on the step outside, rose into her bridge, and the heart floated up not towards the ovens but across the road, to the grey window above the wool shop where the widow sat with her tea going cold.
The widow came down in her slippers before the shutters were fully up. She didn't say much. She bought the last cob loaf, broke off the end, and set it on the step beside the cat, who purred like a kettle beginning to sing. Pudding curled her tail, blinked at the widow, and the heart was gone, having finished its work.
