Stretching watercolour cat with heart
Fine line · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cat stretches forward with its back arched and tail raised, drawn in a thin black outline. Soft watercolour washes of teal, pink, orange and purple fill the body and tail, with a small pink heart floating above its head. The design sits centred on the skin against a plain background, with the colour fading out at the edges of the wash.

Dear Tom,

Mr Harker has finally let the cat in off the platform, though not before she'd spent the whole morning stretching across the ticket office sill like she owned the line. You'd laugh. She goes down on her front legs, backside in the air, tail up like a question mark, and every commuter stops to look. Sally from the buffet says she's practising for the 8:14 to Carlisle.
I found the paint box you left in the lamp room. Half the watercolours had dried to crusts, but the teal was still soft enough to lift with a wet brush. I used it on her tail, and the pink for the little heart I tied to the string of the lost property tag, the one with your name scratched off. Don't tell Mr Harker.
Here's the thing I meant to write. Yesterday the 4:40 came in with nobody on it, and I stood on the platform with your old timetables in my hands, thinking about the carriage door you always held open for Mum. The cat came and sat on my boot and purred until the whistle went. Then she stretched right out in front of me, all orange and bruised purple, as if to say the day could be let go.
So I'm letting it go. Come home when you can. The heart's still on the sill.
Love, Jess
