Key with swirls on a lower leg

Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded key tattoo with an ornate bow and detailed teeth sits on the lower leg, framed by two large soft-edged swirls. The work uses black and grey ink with smooth gradients and blurred edges on the swirls. The key runs diagonally down the centre of the frame, with wooden flooring and a chair visible in the background.

The dust had been rolling off the ridge since breakfast, and by noon the Tuesday bus still hadn't come, so Dolores Pike sat on the step of the Sunset Cabin Motel with the key to room nine in her lap and watched the grit lift off the tarmac in slow, curling spirals. She had been watching them for eleven years, ever since her husband drove off towards Needles with the takings and the good torch.

The key had come with the motel, along with a ledger, a sign missing two letters and a rumour that the brass bow had been cut by a locksmith from Barstow who drank himself into the wash. Nobody on the road could remember his name. The teeth were worn smooth on one side, as if generations of guests had pressed them against the same stubborn lock, hoping for the same small mercy.

A boy in a borrowed hat came up the road a little after two, his mother's car steaming at the junction behind him. He asked if the motel had a room with a lock that worked. Dolores didn't answer straight away. She held out the key and told him to try nine, which was the one that always stuck.

He turned it first time, and the door swung open on a room full of pale sunlight and the smell of old cedar.

She stood up, dusted her palms on her skirt and went to fetch the sign from the storeroom. Then she hung it in the window, letters and all, and left the door unlocked.
