Colourful neo-traditional sugar skull tattoo with pink flowers and green leaves on the thigh.

Sugar skull with pink flowers on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A sugar skull with heart-shaped eye sockets and a patterned, decorated face sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by pink flowers, green leaves and small swirling scrolls. The outlines are bold and the ornamental details are filled with flat colour and soft shading. The tattoo fills the upper thigh, with the skin and a cable visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Dani,

The Bramleys came in early this year, so I've been up the ladders since six with Gwen from next door holding the sacks. The wasps are drunk on the windfalls under the Cox tree and you'd laugh at me, flapping a tea towel at them like I'm shooing hens. The dahlias you planted along the gate have gone mad, pink as a shop sign, and the bees are living in them.

Your skull is still on the windowsill above the sink. I dusted it on Sunday and the icing held up better than either of us expected, though the left eye has gone a bit soft where you licked the spoon. Gwen says it looks like a bingo caller. I told her she'd never seen a proper altar in her life and she could keep her opinions to the chutney. She laughed so hard she had to sit on the step.

Here's what I've been meaning to tell you. Last week I found the old ledger from your grandad's time, the one with every apple variety and the day it was picked. Under the 1987 page, in his capitals, he'd written DANI LIKES THE HEART-SHAPED ONES. We never had heart-shaped anything. I think he meant the little russets by the wall, the ones you used to sneak off with in your pockets. I've left a basket of them on the path for you.

I've decided to press the first cider on the second of November, the way you asked, and pour a glass on the step. If you're there, drink it slowly. If you're not, I'll drink yours too.

Love, Mum
