Sugar skull with pink bow on upper back
Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo
A sugar skull with teal flower-shaped eyes, each with a pink heart at its centre, and a pink bow above on the left. Yellow teardrop shapes, a pink heart nose and purple and blue floral accents surround the skull. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with shading in green and yellow across the skull, and the design fills most of the frame against the upper back and neck.

Inés had been boiling sugar since before light, the rim of the copper pan gone pale with it, and the boats were still out beyond the breakwater. Her nephew Tomás stirred the second pan and asked why the skulls needed eyes when the dead had none left to use them.

She told him the eyes were for the living. She pressed each mould, lifted the skulls out while they were still warm, and painted teal petals round every socket, with a pink heart at the centre of each so that whoever came to the cemetery would see something to walk toward. Yellow drops for the tears nobody cried in the street. A heart for the nose, because the nose was the part people forgot.
Late in the afternoon a woman came up from the harbour with a photograph and no money. She wanted a bow on the skull, the pink kind her daughter had worn to school on the morning the boat did not come back. Inés did not ask about the boat. She painted the bow on the left side, tied it with three quick strokes, and wrapped the skull in newspaper.
That night the lighthouse swept across the window and the finished skulls sat in a row on the sill, their eyes full of small hearts. At dawn a boat came round the breakwater low in the water, and the woman was already on the quay with the paper undone, holding the pink bow up toward the sea.
