Sugar skull cats and paw prints on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cat heads decorated in sugar skull style, with orange and pink flower patterns, black eye patches and small hearts. Blue paw prints and a lighter blue paw outline sit around them, with a smaller paw print at the lower edge. Bold black outlines and flat colour fills dominate, and the photo is taken at an angle on a red floor with a bare foot and a black sandal in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The marigolds had been strung across the lane since Thursday, and by Saturday night every cat in Santa Brígida had come to see what the copal smoke was about. Doña Amparo counted them from her doorway the way she counted loaves: seven grey ones, two ginger toms, a black cat with one ear, and a small thing nobody in the village owned, its face painted like a sugar skull with orange flowers blooming on its cheeks.

Her own cat, Pancho, had died in March, and she had never put away his saucer. She set it on the altar between the pan de muerto and a glass of mezcal and filled it with warm milk. "You can't have the bread," she told the room. "Your teeth were bad before you died, mijo." The painted cat came first, leaving blue paw prints across the tiles that the candlelight turned into stepping stones, and it sat so neatly beside the saucer that she laughed out loud.

The others crowded in after it, and the lane filled with the small sounds of lapping and purring. Amparo noticed the painted cat was not drinking. It was looking at her with its one good eye, the black patch over the other, as if waiting for her to finish the story she had started at the wake.

She finished it. She told them how Pancho had once stolen a whole chicken from the market and walked home with it like a priest carrying the sacrament. When she looked up, the saucer was empty and the paw prints led back out through the marigolds, each one a little brighter than the last.
