Paw print with watercolour splashes on a leg
Calf · Mixed · Photo
The image is a triptych of three photographs of the same tattoo taken from different angles. A solid black paw print with four toe pads and a main pad sits on the leg, with loose watercolour splashes of orange, red, pink, blue, green and yellow spreading outward from it. Black ink dominates the paw while the colour is applied as soft, bleeding washes against pale skin on a plain background.

Nobody at Clough Street dye works ever saw the dog come in. What they saw was the prints, one morning in March, going across the floor of the vat house: black pads the size of a crown, dragged through the puddles of madder and woad the night men had left to settle. By the time Ada Pilling reached the yard the prints had gone out through the gate and up the cobbles, and every one of them was bleeding colour at the edges, as if the dog had walked through a rainbow and it had soaked into the stone.

Her father said it was the Harrop boy's lurcher, the one that ate cloth off the drying lines. Ada knew that dog. This one had no collar and no name, only a tongue like a red ribbon and a way of stopping at the end of each street to look back, as if it wanted to be followed. So she followed. Past the chapel, past the lamp that never worked, to the canal bridge where the trail simply ended in a splash of yellow, as though the animal had taken a running jump into the water and kept going.
Ada stood on the bridge in her wet boots and cursed the dog, and then she laughed, because the water below was the colour of the sky at six o'clock, orange and pink and a green she had never once managed to mix at the vats. She went home and told her father the lurcher had gone off to paint the canal.
He didn't believe her. But the next spring the narrowboats came up through the lock with their hulls stained in those same colours, every one of them, and the lock keeper swore he had found a line of black paw prints on the towpath leading back the way they had come.
