The road out of Santa Inés ran forty miles through mesquite and wind, and every November a white cat walked it with a basket on her arm. Nobody in town had ever seen her carry anything heavier than roses. She wore a pink bow the size of a hand and a red dress trimmed with green, and she fanned herself with a painted fan, though the night was cold enough to crack the water in the troughs.

Tomás Ibarra found her sitting on the lip of a dry well, her fan open, her purple flower eyes fixed on the stars. He had been driving mules since he was nine and had never stopped to talk to anything on the road, but his lamp was low and his tongue was loose with the drink he had not wanted. "The dead come up this road tonight," she said, without looking at him. "They are tired and they cannot see the way. Someone has to sing for them, or they will walk past their own gates."
She held out a single red rose from the basket. "Sing the one your mother sang over the bread." He had not sung it since the funeral, not even to the mules. His voice came out cracked, then steady, and the wind dropped to listen. Along the road the mesquite began to glow with small yellow lights, one for each name he had forgotten to say.
At first light the cat was gone. Tomás found a pink bow caught on a thorn, and his mule standing patiently by the gate of the hill cemetery, the basket beside it, full of petals. He left the bow where it hung and went home to sing the rest of the verses.
