Sugar skull Hello Kitty tattoo on the foot

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of a cat face in the style of a Mexican sugar skull, with a large pink bow at the top, whiskers in black, and a decorative pattern of pink and green flowers, swirls and dots. The design uses bold black outlines with flat, saturated fills in pink, orange, yellow and green. Two photographs show the same tattoo on the top of a foot against a pale background, one from above and one at a different angle.

Dear Tomasz, the ovens were lit at four and by half past I had flour to the elbows and a tray of sugar skulls cooling along the back bench. Aunt Lupe wants them all white with black eyes, the way she has made them since before I was born, but Mrs Pryce ordered one special. A cat's face, a big pink bow across the top, and she was very clear that the pink had to match the hairslide her daughter wore to the christening. I mixed the colour three times before it looked right.

The fine nozzle is the hard part. The whiskers are only a few strokes each, but if the hand shakes they look like cracks in a plate. I piped the swirls like the ironwork on the gate at Holloway Road, then dotted the marigolds in orange and yellow, and I painted the teeth with apricot glaze so they would catch the light. Lupe leaned over my shoulder and said cats had no business on an altar. I told her the old families kept cats in the house and fed them from the same table, so the dead would not mind a little company.

Mrs Pryce came for the box at dawn, when the sky over the bins had gone the colour of weak tea. She lifted the skull out, turned it to the window and laughed in the surprised way people do when something is smaller and more careful than they expected. She asked whether sugar would keep. I said it keeps longer than people think, provided it stays dry and nobody lets a child lick the bow.

After she left, Lupe pulled a plain white skull from the tray, no bow, no swirls, and tucked it into the bag beside the box. She said it was for the cat. I wrote the order in the book and underlined it twice, and the ovens ticked as they cooled.
