The sugar skulls were already cooling on the marble slab when Teodora noticed the cat mould was missing its whiskers. She swore at the cupboard, at her brother's tin of pink sugar, and at the dead tomcat she had promised to bake for the Ortiz girl's altar. Brujo had bitten everyone in the village except Teodora, who had fed him fish heads for nine years, and she felt she owed him a face that looked like he'd been good at heart.

She piped the eyes in black, the flowers with yellow centres, the leaves in green, and the bow last, pink as the ribbon her mother wore to Sunday mass. Her brother Mateo leaned in the doorway, stealing a broken sweet from the reject tray. "It looks like a lady cat," he said. "It is a lady cat's skull," she said. "Brujo was a gentleman. Gentlemen don't get bows." She did not wipe it off.

On the night of the offering, the Ortiz girl set the cat beside a photograph of an old woman with a shawl and a sharp chin. In the candlelight the orange sugar teeth looked as if they were grinning at a joke only the dead were allowed to hear. The next morning Teodora found nine fish heads stacked neatly on her step, and a pink ribbon tied to the gate, still curled from the heat of the candles.
