Sugar skull portrait with red flowers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large portrait of a woman with sugar skull style face paint and a crown of red flowers, shown in shaded black and grey with a soft realistic finish. Red beads hang from a necklace and a small red accent sits below the figure, which is set in a dark background on the outer thigh. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame, with the surrounding skin and a dark skirt in the photo.

Dear Marisol,

You will laugh at me, but I have finished the painting for the Sisters at San Lorenzo. The abbess wanted a portrait of Mother Clara for the November altar, and she sent a note saying the face must not look sad, only ready to leave. So I mixed the paints the way the old limners did: white for the bones of the face, black where the shadows sit, and nothing bright until the very end.

The flowers were the hard part. The abbess insisted on red, the cockscomb that grows wild against the cloister wall, and I spent three mornings learning how light falls through a petal. When I finally laid the crown across her brow, Sister Benedicta came in from the kitchen and stood very still. She crossed herself and said the flowers looked as if they were about to be lit from inside.

The beads were Clara's own, coral from a rosary her mother brought back from the coast. I painted them one at a time, each a small red moon, and beneath the necklace I set a single drop that the abbess calls a seed that fell. I do not know if she is right. I only know the altar now looks like a room with its door left open.

Write to me when the wind turns. Tell Papá the ox is not to be trusted near the well.
