Small dragonfly tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small dragonfly with outstretched wings and a slim body is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in a close-up view of the skin. The design uses thin, clean linework with dark, solid ink in the body and wing outlines, and the ink appears in black and grey tones. Several bracelets sit above and below the tattoo, including gold chains, wooden beads and a small pavé charm, while the tattoo stands out as the simple focal point.

The survey drone had been reporting the same reed bed for eleven days, and Ysolde Marr was tired of trusting it. She crouched on the causeway with her tablet balanced on a coil of cable, watching the grey water lift and settle under a sky the colour of wet slate. Her brother's old spanner hung from her belt. Out in the sedge, something was supposed to be flying.

It rose at last, a slim dark thread with its wings held flat and open like a pair of folded sails, and it did not look like anything the drone had sent her. It looked like the field guides Oma had kept in a biscuit tin, the ones with the Latin names underlined in pencil. The last wild dragonflies had gone from these fens before Ysolde was born. The engineers in Ely had rebuilt one from a seed-bank of old genomes three years ago, and it had been learning to hunt midges on its own ever since, which the reports called a success and nobody had thought to write down as anything more.
It circled her twice, then settled on the rail beside her wrist, close enough that she could see the fine black veins in its wings. The tracker she had clipped to its tail caught the light and blinked red. Ysolde realised the drone had never been the instrument that mattered. The insect had been finding the water all along, and she had been the one watching the screen.
She unclipped the tracker, pocketed it, and held out her hand. The dragonfly lifted, turned once over the reeds, and was gone into the sedge.
