The snow closed the pass on the Tuesday, and by the Thursday there were eleven people sleeping in the taproom of the Hollin Gate and a dragonfly sitting on the inside of the kitchen window. Nobody had let it in. It had come through the scullery door when the wind dropped for a moment, and it had stayed, dark-winged and still, with its wings spread flat as if it were pinned to the glass.

Mrs Carrow, who had kept the inn for thirty years, said a dragonfly in winter was a bad sign, and then she said that was only what her mother had said, and that she did not know what it meant. The cook wanted it out. The boy who carried the coal wanted to keep it in a jar. Mrs Carrow said to leave it be, and every morning she set a saucer of sugared water on the sill beside it, and every morning the water was gone.

On the ninth day the sky cleared hard and blue. A carter named Dunstan came in from the north side with his hat in his hands. His horse had gone through the ice on the beck two days before, and he had been sure he would die in the drifts above the old quarry. He said a dark thing had flown in front of him all the morning, low over the snow, and he had followed it because there was nothing else to follow.

Mrs Carrow went to the window. The sill was empty. Out in the yard the snow was marked with a line of small dents, each one a little further than the last, leading up the slope towards the pass.
