Small dragonfly tattoo on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small dragonfly is tattooed on the inside of a wrist, with its wings spread and body drawn in dark ink. The design is shown in solid black ink with little visible shading, and the ink appears to be a single colour. Several gold chain and beaded bracelets sit around the wrist, and the plain skin and soft background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The water dropped so far that summer the Mary Ann sat hard on the mud below Stoke lock, and Tom Hadley swore at it every morning over his tea. His daughter Nell, who was nine and had no patience for swearing, took the stern line down to the willows and waited for the dragonflies to come out over the reeds.

Her gran had told her that dragonflies were the river's messengers, that each one carried a word from the water to whoever sat still enough to hear it. Nell did not believe this. She believed dragonflies were quick and bright and that she could never catch one, which she thought was the same as proof. Still she sat still. The dark one that came to rest on the tiller rope had its wings spread flat, and it looked at her the way the lock-keeper looked at boats that had not paid.
Dig by the third post, the wind seemed to say through the reeds, or perhaps that was only the wind. Nell walked the towpath to the third post, scraped at the mud with a bent spoon and found a brass horse-bell gone green, tied to a rotted length of line. Her father carried it up to the lock office. The keeper turned it over twice, went quiet, and then told them that his own uncle had lost that bell the summer the cut was last this low, and that no one had ever come to claim it.
That evening the sluice opened and the water came back brown and cold, lifting the Mary Ann off the mud as if it had only been resting. Nell sat on the cabin roof with the bell in her lap. The dragonfly was gone from the rope, but a small dark shape lay across the planks where it had perched, and it stayed there until the lamps went out.
