Sun and crescent moon tattoos on both feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A pair of bare feet shows a sun with a face and a crescent moon with a face, both drawn in black linework with mandala-style petals and dangling ornamental drops. The fine lines are fairly even, with dotted detailing and small stars and a tiny sun and moon on the toes. The image is in black ink only, set against a dark, reflective background.

Hanging from the bottom of each are little drops, strung one under another, the way the chain hangs off your lamp.

The sun's eyes are half shut, like your father's were after a double shift, and the moon wears a sly little smile with tiny stars climbing the curve of her edge. There are dotted lines running between the points as fine as a thread, and someone has drawn a small sun and a small moon in the margin as if they were a joke between the two of them. I pinned the sheet above the range where the steam can't curl it. The sun is on the left and the moon on the right, so whichever way the lamp swings in the draught, one of them is looking at the door.
The cage stuck at four on Tuesday for the best part of an hour. Nobody would tell us anything at the gate except that the men were safe and the engineer was cursing somebody called Bevan. I stood by the wall with Mair Owen holding my elbow and counted every helmet that came up, and when I reached nineteen I stopped counting and just watched the lamps bobbing towards the lift.
So come home by the time the sun is up, Idris. I will be awake, and I will have the kettle on, and if you are late the moon will be sulking at you from the dresser for a week. Your loving wife, Nell.
