Sun and moon tattoos on both feet
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two tattoos sit on the tops of a pair of bare feet, one showing a sun with a face and flowing rays, the other a crescent moon with a face and a small star. Both designs use fine outline work, with stippled dots and hanging drop and diamond motifs. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, and the photograph is set against a dark leather surface.

The tent poles had been wrapped in tinsel since the morning, and Marguerite was still picking glitter from the hem of her coat when the sun slid down behind the dodgems. Her brother Ansel had painted the moon on the side of the caravan years ago, a crescent with a sleepy face, and every evening the two of them argued about whether it looked more like him or more like their mother. Tonight it looked like neither. Tonight it looked like it wanted its dinner.

The Sun was the problem. He had come to the fair with the Harvest Carousel from Market Harborough, a man with a gilded moustache and rays of copper wire he wore like a cape, and he had spent three weeks trying to buy the ground beneath their pitch. Ansel had refused. Marguerite had gone to see him instead, carrying a paper bag of dried apricots and a question about how a man could be so bright and still need to borrow the moon's light to see his own face in the mirror.
He did not answer her. He only laughed and lit a cigarette off the carousel's bulb. So she walked back across the field under the first real stars of September, counting the dots that marked the path, each one a little silver drop she had pricked into the grass with a hatpin. At the caravan steps she turned around. The sun had gone out early behind the hill, and for the first time in years the moon hung low over both of them without a single cloud to argue with.
