Sun and crescent moon tattoos on both feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet are shown from above, each with a tattoo on the upper foot. The left foot has a sun with a face, surrounded by spiky rays and hanging ornamental lines, and the right foot has a crescent moon with a face and dangling beaded chains. Small sun and moon motifs sit on the toes, all drawn in fine black linework with minimal shading against a dark, reflective background.

You have been painting the sun on the Anchor's sign since Whitsun, and each morning the board comes off its hooks and lies across two trestles in the yard behind the Ship Inn at Carrick Bay, where the gulls pick at the bins and the tide comes grey under the sea wall. Mrs Pargeter wants her moon to look wise rather than sour, so you have worked the face three times, softening the mouth until it smiles the way a lodger smiles when the rent is paid.

Alf, who holds the brushes for you and grumbles about the price of linseed, says the old landlord's grandfather had a rule: the sun hangs in the front window and the moon in the back, and the two must never share a wall. Nobody remembers why. You suspect it was simply a poor fit for one parlour. When you ask what became of the first board, Alf looks at the harbour and says it went in during a quarrel over who owned the dark.
On the last evening you add the chains, fine beaded dangles that fall from each rim toward the edge of the board, and you blow on the paint until the beads stop shining. Then you carry the moon round to the road and hold it up under the lamp, and the sun, already hung in the window, catches the same light across the empty street. For the length of one tide the two faces look at each other over the cobbles, and the chains swing between them, not quite touching.
