Sun and crescent moon tattoos on clasped hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped together on a pebbled shoreline with water and driftwood behind them. A small black outline sun with rays sits on the back of one hand, and a thin black crescent moon sits on the wrist of the other arm. Both tattoos use simple, clean linework in solid black ink with no shading, and the soft, muted background keeps the focus on the marks.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sea had taken the east wall of Carrick Hold the winter the sun first came down to the shingle below it. Nobody in the village thought much of it. The sun was a plain sort of neighbour, up before the fishing boats and late to bed, and all he wanted from the moon was a little of her light to see his way home over the rocks.

The moon lived in the roofless hall above the tide line, where the old queen's chapel still kept its window. She came down each evening when the water was low, and they walked the pebbles together while the gulls thought it foolish. Every dawn the sun had to leave before the moon could finish her sentence, and every dusk she had to go before he could finish his. In the end they agreed that a mark on each of them would do for a promise.

So he pressed a small ring of rays into the back of his hand with a thorn dipped in soot, and she drew a thin curve on her wrist with the tip of a gull feather. Her curve was no wider than a fingernail. His ring was wide enough to hold a thumb. When the tide came up round the castle that night they took hold of each other, hand over wrist, and kept hold until the water went back out.

In the morning the sun rose early and the moon went down late, and the fishermen say that if you walk the shingle at the turn of the tide you can still find two marks in the wet stones, one bright and one thin, lying side by side where their hands were joined.
