Sun and moon faces on upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a sun with a warm orange and brown face and flaming rays on the left, and a moon with a pale blue face and flowing hair on the right, with the two faces almost touching. The sun and moon are enclosed in a circular outline, with bold dark blue linework and soft shading on the faces and hair. The design sits centrally on the upper back, with a small green tattoo partly visible at the lower right edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had kept the night lamp room at Harrowgate Colliery for six winters, and every brass check tag that came back up the shaft carried a name stamped by a man who was already underground. Tonight the tag for the number four face came back warm, which meant someone had been gripping it all shift.

Her day counterpart, Tom Kellan, hung his tags in the wooden rack in the order he'd worn them, so she could read from the scuffs on the brass how hard he'd worked. He had never once been on her shift. The tag board was the only place they had ever spoken, a conversation in scratched numbers and the odd word cut with a nail: rain, roof, bad air, tea.

Tonight there was a mark that wasn't a number. Two circles had been scored into the brass, one ringed with spikes and one with hair spilling out to the edge, drawn so close the faces nearly touched. Someone had signed it with a T. She turned the tag over and found a second line beneath: the sun comes up at six, and I won't be the one to see you go by.

She hung the tag on its hook, lit the last lamp for the cage, and took a nail from her apron. Beside his sun she scratched a crescent with a little hair streaming from it, then pinned the board back where the morning men would find it before the lamps were issued.
